Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation, was registered and established under a Charitable Trust , in the year 2006 (Regd. No. 2477/2006). It was setup as Non Profit organisation and a pioneering initiative by London Olympics 2012 Bronze Medallist, Pugilist and Padma Bhushan awardee Ms. MC MARY KOM and her husband Mr. K. Onler , with the aim of a social responsibility of promoting the Boxing sport amongst underprivileged Youth in of Manipur and other parts North East India.

Most sportspersons in Manipur come from poor and middle class families with little understanding of Sporting Careers and financial implications. Right Guidance and Motivation was rare , which would lead to lack of motivation to work towards their Sporting Dreams and Career…

Mary Kom, too had experienced similar hardships and the challenges in her early days of sports career. This fact remained the simple motivation to establish the boxing academy under the aegis of the Foundation with the MOTTO ; “Train up a child in the way he should go” to guide youth with potential and help them to achieve their Sporting dreams.

The initial phase involved humble beginnings with a handful of students picked from a village by M.C. Mary Kom, who had potential but no access to a platform to nurture and prove their talents in a productive and competitive environment.

The foundation avails free coaching with free lodging and food and additional expenses involved during competitions. As an endeavour to being a self-supporting foundation, Mary herself borne the entire expenses incurred in food and lodge besides a help received from TRUSTEES, LOCAL GOVT support and Patrons from Business and Banking Community in kind, contributions from well-wishers and SAI Extension Scheme in the recent years.

Until the recent past , The academy has functioned with Limited resources with basic infrastructure and challenges in the Geographical and climatic environment and still managed to produce several states and national champions. This can be also attributed to the high talent pool in North east India , and their adaptability and passion towards the Boxi.

The foundation is also affiliated to Manipur Amateur Boxing Association (MABA). The strength of the students keeps on fluctuating as we in time refer deserving students to SAI if they wish to and qualifies the selection procedure and some dropout in between, reasoning to health problem and some are weeded out when they fail to maintain disciplines in the campus. The present strength is 64 boxers, out of which 32 are residential and 34 are outsiders.

Present status and functioning

The Government of Manipur has allotted 3.30 acres of land at National Games Village, Langol Imphal on 25 February 2013 to the foundation as an honour to the outstanding achievement made by Mary Kom. For all these years, the Academy manages with the least available infrastructure; open public lawn for training and coaching, rented a house for hostel for the past 4 years and recently, the athletes are being provided stay at the premises of a family friend and trustee of the foundation Mr. K. Jadumani Singh’s apartment , at no charge.

Current Development

With the available land allotted recently, the foundation has constructed Gymnasium and Outdoor Boxing Hall under National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Sports Authority of India (SAI) has also provided a competent coaching support.

Future plan

The foundation has recently approached Business Organisations and Funding Institutions under a Corporate Social Responsibility programfor support to aid in setting up the main infrastructure consisting of an Indoor Hall with 2 boxing rings, Hostel to accommodate 50 boys and 50 girls, quarters, dining hall, administration block and other requirements of a BOXING academy.

Assured support for these 100 Athletes is the key challenge for this academy , which would lead to a mutually beneficial association and a faster process of setting up a World Class Training Centre.

We look forward to achieveing a better performance by the Athletes, with better facilities. Going Forward We also look forward to the Central and State Government’s rendering their support towards this cause.

Focus Areas At The Boxing Academy

  • To identify young athletes between the age group 12 -18 years and ensure adequate training to them, so as to lay a strong foundation in moulding their physical growth, psychological development and Mind control abilities to be a Champion.
  • To ensure their basic school education upto a minimum of higher secondary level is continued and unaffected.
